The Security Council and U.N. General Assembly stood in tribute of Bhumibol, the king of Thailand. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon viewed Bhumibol as being a “unifying national leader” that was internationally respected.

In the beginning of the Thursday meeting, the assembly was asked to stand by the assembly’s president, Peter Thompson, for a moment of silence. The moment of silence was a tribute to Bhumibol. King Bhumibol had passed away earlier in the day. Another moment of silence was done by Petr IIiichev, a U.N. deputy ambassador for Russia, in the beginning of their Security Council meeting.

The royal family also received condolences from the secretary-general, the assembly, and the council. Condolences was also sent to citizens of Thailand and their government. Ban Ki-moon made a statement, “At this time of sorrow and loss. I hope that Thailand will continue to honor king Bhumibol’s legacy of commitment to universal values and respect for human rights.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel also expressed condolences for the death of King Bhumibol. Merkel mentioned how Bhumibol strengthened and modernized the Thailand country, while being on the throne for seven decades. He “worked tirelessly for the welfare of the Thai people”, said Merkel. Thailand’s King was able to steer his country through economic and political crisis. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the foreign minister mentioned how Bhumibol was a key player in Thailand and Germany’s friendship.

After the death of King Bhumibol, nervousness has spread across the OANDA currency trading firm. Investors says there is a lot of fear, due to the political uncertainty. But, they believe the economic losses are going to be limited. Southeast Asia’s stabilizing figure, King Bhumibol Adulyadej had some tumultuous experiences during his reign for 70 years.

OANDA believes that the stock exchange index will continue to be under pressure. They said that majority of any uncertainty premium has already been built with both prices, so the losses are going to be limited. OANDA went on to say, “We expect the Bank of Thailand will be ready to step in to smooth any disorderly currency moves. The military government is expected to extend their tenure, in order to stabilize the government. This move will provide support for the Stock Exchange of Thailand index (SETi). This will be after the initial issues have been worked out of the system.

Bhumibol also received praise from Dutch King, Willem-Alexander for “emphasizing the values of harmony and peaceful cooperation in his country.”
